What We Do

The Friends are proud to support conservation, education and research in Elk Island National Park.

The following are some examples of projects that have been initiated or supported by the Friends.

• Black Bear Movement throughout EINP and the Beaver Hills Biosphere.

• Trumpeter Swan Reintroduction and Monitoring

• Wood Bison Conservation

• Mesocarnivore Monitoring

• Tiger Salamanders

• Beaver Lodge Occupancy Surveys

• Bat and Ungulate Camera Studies

• Habitat use of the Western Toad (Connie Browne, PhD student)

• The role of nutrients on the larval ecology of amphibians (Arthur Whiting, Ph.D. student)

Research Funding

Not only does the Friends of Elk Island Society finance conservation projects undertaken in Elk Island National Park, but it also supports and helps finance graduate research undertaken by students from the University of Alberta and other academic institutions.

How does it work?

Applications for Research Grants are first sent to Elk Island National Park's Science Advisory Committee, here they are reviewed against the Park's Ecosystem Conservation Plan. Those applications which are consistent with the Park's policy are forwarded to the FEIS Conservation Research and Education Committee (CRE) for consideration.
